Corporate Social Responsibility of Private Companies in Natural Disasters

Corporate Social Responsibility is an ambidextrous concept which on one hand improves the social strata while on other polishes the goodwill of the company practising it. CSR in this era has gone beyond philanthropy and has taken the form of a legal mandate. Corporate Social Responsibility has been structured to capture the imperative and immediate need of ethical and social responsibility at intra and inert continental levels. In India CSR has been used as a tool to combat various mishaps in the society. One of the arenas where the philanthropy of various companies has displayed an up thrust time and again is disaster management pre and posts the catastrophe. The role of various companies such as Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) or TATA at many such occasions has opened the door for a dimension of corporate Social Responsibility. The research paper aims to highlight and evaluate the role of a company during the time of such mishaps. It further critically examines effect of implementation of CSR and the reasoning behind the legal mandate. It concludes by proposing a paradigm to achieve a pragmatic model of CSR that would suffice the need of the hour.
